Dare to Dream?

{ q u o t a t i o n }

“You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.”

• C. S. Lewis

An inspirational quote–especially if we are having, well, a happy new year.

Maybe things are going just swimmingly for us: we’re keeping up with our resolutions, enjoying a fun-filled holiday weekend, and looking forward to big things on the horizon for the rest of the year.

After all, it is pretty easy to feel optimistic about goals and dreams when everything is coming up roses.

But maybe the start of the new year already finds some of us discouraged. We’ve received some unexpected news or faced setbacks at work.

Or perhaps we started the year too disillusioned to even make resolutions in the first place.

In times like these it can be hard to see the purpose in setting another goal, much less in daring to dream up anything new, and Lewis’s inspirational words may be cold comfort for those of us who feel like our efforts are fruitless and our best times are behind us.

But Lewis may have known whereof he spoke–and he certainly seemed to know a thing or two about waiting.

After all, the renowned author and philosopher was himself in his fifties before publishing the first book in his famous Chronicle of Narnia series. The last fifteen years of life saw more than fifteen significant publications, including the rest of the Narnia series, proving that Lewis was more than able to dream not only new dreams but whole new worlds too.

Of course, most of us are not as accomplished as Lewis and likely are not planning to revolutionize the landscape of children’s fantasy fiction. To be honest, most of us probably just want to be a little more patient and maybe lose a few pounds.

And even those aspirations seem beyond our reach most of the time.

Lest we be tempted to think that Lewis was a man of better mettle than we are, we would do well to remember that there are 2 reasons we are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream:

  1. The Lord is always with us.
  2. His mercies are new every morning.

So no matter what we are facing, no matter how many times we fail, no matter how long we have to wait for things to turn around, the Lord is faithful in His love for us.

Each new day is met with new mercies–and that means new courage to face trials, new grace to cover our failures, new determination to stay the course and fight the good fight.

And maybe, some mornings, the new daring to just dream a little.

{ c h a p t e r  &  v e r s e }

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
